About
My name is Joschka Hüllmann and I am currently working as an assistant professor for the department of High-tech Business and Entrepreneurship (HBE) at the University of Twente in the Netherlands. I am also affiliated with the ERCIS competence center Smarter Work at the Westfälische Wilhelms-University Münster.
Expertise.
My expertise focuses on the future of work and covers multiple topics at the intersection of people, organizations, and technologies.
- Future of Work
- People Analytics
- Virtual, Distributed Work
- AI & Algorithmic Management
- Domains & Industries
- Human Resources
- Information Technology
- Manufacturing and Farming
Technological advances change how work is organised and lived, leading to new ways of working. Shaping this digital transformation of work is crucial to ensure the well-being and productivity of all those involved. A recent phenomenon is artificial intelligence (AI) at work, where algorithms support, augment, or automate organisational decision-making. I examine this phenomenon and pioneer applications in the domains of human resources (“People Analytics”), information technology services, and industrial settings such as manufacturing and farming.
Further information about selected projects can be found on dedicated subpages.
Methods
I continuously advance my methodological skills, relying on mixed-methods research designs. I employ qualitative approaches to theory building, using case study designs, interviews, or netnographies. I am triangulating and corroborating these qualitative results with surveys and computational methods, particularly the collection and analysis of digital trace data (application logs, behavioural data and logs, computational social science). Combining qualitative approaches with advanced computational methods provides novel avenues for generating insights about organizational phenomena at the intersection of technology and work.
Besides my academic skills, I have an established software development and programming background. In professional practice, I worked as an application developer in various positions. I was responsible for managing the design and implementation of projects in critical infrastructure domains such as energy and public transport.
I share my experience either by writing and publishing articles, or by speaking at conferences and other events. I always try to bridge the gap between academia and practice.
